RAGGAMUFFIN 2010
For the third consecutive year, Andrew McManus Presents was pleased to hold Australia’s largest reggae festival Raggamuffin. With another stellar line up, Raggamuffin 2010 starred eight of reggae’s greatest live on stage - Shaggy, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Julian Marley, Blue King Brown, Sly & Robbie, Steel Pulse, Sean Kingston and House of Shem.
The festival was once again a huge success and smashed attendance records from previous years nationally, with close to 30,000 reggae lovers alone attending the Rotorua show.
Raggamuffin promoter Andrew McManus says, “This year’s Raggamuffin was bigger than ever and delivered an amazing day of music”.
Headlining Raggamuffin in 2010 was SHAGGY, who set stages alight with his energetic moves and performances of crowd favourite's 'It Wasn't Me' and 'Angel', to name a few.
After 20 million album sales, 11 worldwide Top Ten singles, and a Grammy award, SHAGGY is still on the grind! The ska classic ‘Oh Carolina’ introduced the world to Shaggy and hits like ‘It Wasn’t Me’ and ‘Angel’ from his juggernaut album ‘Hotshot’ consolidated him as one of Jamaica’s finest musical exports – and that’s saying something! Shaggy is doing his part to make good music, make a difference and prove that the ‘World Is Just One Big Yard!!’
A late addition to the line-up, MS. LAURYN HILL, performed brilliantly, regularly finishing her set to the loud cheers and chants for an encore.
An American recording artist, musician, producer and actress established her reputation in the hip-hop world as the lone female member of the Fugees. She sang at Harlem's Apollo Theater at age thirteen and soon after met Prakazrel ‘Pras’ Michel and his cousin, Wyclef Jean and the three formed the Fugees.
In 1996 the group released their second album which Ms Hill co-wrote and co-produced. The Score sold over 18 million copies, making the Fugees the biggest-selling rap group of all time and winning them two Grammy Awards (Best Rap Album and Best R&B Performance by a duo or group).
A few years later after meeting her long-term partner, Rohan Marley son of Bob Marley, Ms Hill launched her solo career and released the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The recording earned her five Grammy Awards and praise from industry heavyweights such as Public Enemy's Chuck D who admiringly described her as "sunlight" and a "Bob Marley (of the) 21st Century”.
Following the April 2009 release of “Awake” JULIAN MARLEY performed to celebrate the music and message of all the family who have come before. His soulful vocals, hypnotic beats and the roots-reggae sound combined with street energy hip-hop deliver a smooth combination that is very much his own.

On their first Raggamuffin tour SLY & ROBBIE, the modern masters of rhythm brought their own brand of reggae to the bill in 2010. Sly & Robbie met in the 70’s while playing in different groups, they clicked musically and have been living and creating their own rhythm ever since.
Australia’s own BLUE KING BROWN was a welcome addition to the 2010 line-up. Hailed by Santana as “the voice of the street and the band of the future” this 8 to 11 piece powerhouse band brought their cross-generational grooves and socially conscious sound to prove that they are one of Australia’s greatest acts and quite easily one of the stand out acts on the entire tour.
STEEL PULSE, brought back the groove. The UK’s only Grammy Award winning Reggae group they have explored various styles since they started out in 1975 but when it comes to the message they have remained close to their roots and always continue their commitment to deliver the positive messages through spiritually up lifting music.
International platinum selling artist SEAN KINGSTON got the crowd moving to an awesome selection of his feel-good anthems. A vibrant fusion of pop, doo-wop and reggae, Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” single made history as one of the fastest ascents up the Billboard Hot 100 charts ever, eventually climbing to number 1. The collection of pop-fueled songs that make up the new album “Tomorrow”, got the crowd on-song.
Hailing from Aotearoa, New Zealand HOUSE OF SHEM once again delivered Raggamuffin fans an unforgettable performance with their rare mix of power and harmony within their own unique blend of traditional and contemporary reggae styles, no doubt giving the legends of reggae a run for their money.
Along with everyone’s favourite reggae tunes, there was plenty of hip-hop, funk and soul to keep everyone grooving, as well as plenty of places to chill out.
These eight great artists provided a veritable musical reggae feast that was Raggamuffin 2010. See you in 2011.
