CHEECH & CHONG
APRIL 2009 Andrew McManus Presents were very excited to present Cheech & Chong in a national tour in April 2009. The legendary cult comedy heros were wasted and wacked out from a hugely successful sold right out tour of the US and Canada. Cheech & Chong trail blazed the track for counter culture comedy in the 70’s and 80's with over 10 cult classic movies and albums. They were joined by infectiously funny special guest Shelby Chong.
Cheech and Chong were back on the road for the first time in more than 25 years bringing their wonderfully wacky humour down under with a tour that has received rave reviews in Amercia and includes the infectiously funny Shelby Chong.
They performed as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Sydney Comedy Festival as well as dates in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
Like many marriages, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have weathered a few artistic storms over the years, but their brand of irreverent hippy counter culture comedy was as biting and infectious as ever.
The most recent American tour for the proudly Mexican-American Cheech and Canadian-born Chong sold out across the USA, with their fans from the 1970s being joined by a new generation of comedy lovers who laughed till they cried at the classic Cheech and Chong characters and sketches.
This is a duo who can turn any experience into the basis of a comedy sketch – like Chong's short prison sentence for selling glass pipes or Cheech’s sudden appearance in a skin-tight tattooed bodysuit under a pink tutu, topped off with Mickey Mouse ears and a Mardi Gras mask!
Cheech and Chong have enjoyed amazing success over the past 25 years, with nine hit comedy albums, one Grammy award and eight hit films, beginning with their 1978 classic Up In Smoke.
And there’s a lot more to these two irreverent alternative kings of comedy. Cheech had a recurring role in the hit television series Lost, and a guest appearance on Grey’s Anatomy, while Chong began his career as a musician before appearing in the film National Lampoon’s Senior Trip and playing the role of Leo in television’s That 70s Show, as well as guesting on Dharma and Greg.
Cheech and Chong’s Australian tour also featured Chong’s wife of 33 years, Shelby, as the opening stand up routine. Shelby is a fine comedian in her own right and has been wowing the duo’s audiences across America in their reunion tour.
In these times of gloom and doom economic headlines, Cheech and Chong were the perfect antidote with their dose of potent, low-brow comedy at its finest. And it was a rare comedy act that can truthfully boast of being a pot-loving duo who are all at once movie stars, comedians and rock stars who have been opening act for the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen!
